I wish I could speak any form of the Chinese language. It’s such a global language for instance there’s this Syrian doctor who went to China to understand reconstructive surgery and be under mentorship of this legendary doctor named Dr. Fu Chuan and since he’s one of the best in the world the Syrian doctor has to speak Hokkien all I’m saying is English is becoming so irrelevant

Boyhood and music

Remember how I said that it’s important for narratives to be self-contained, only mildly influenced by things t around it; especially the music
Boyhood relies on zeitgeist. With musical references depicting the time frame the sequence is set in. The music seamlessly interwoven with the story. It’s not glaring, it feels there is a necessity with its references
In a sense, the references are necessary (since they are the simplest sample of that particular culture) in order for us to believe that this happened in real-time. That these characters exist suspending our disbeliefs it is mere creation. On an emotional level, this film is so powerful. The arc the character take from the beginning til the end. It all feels real. Because the songs are real.
I’m actually referring to several tweets I wrote a while back about Contemporary Music and self-sustained narrative in film

I composed this thought when I first watched The Blind Side for the first time, a long long time ago

I watched The Blind Side for the first time today. It’s not bad like people claim it to be. I mean John Lee Handcock could have handled the themes a lot more carefully. It’s like a car crash. You can’t take your eyes off it. But in the end, it all works.

Let’s try this one more time

On a surprisingly significantly different note, thoughts I had about today

We all know that person(s) that would go through great lengths to make us happy and would be happy from making us happy but ask yourself, would you be truly happy knowing that you don’t feel the same way? That you would never feel the same way they do? That’s why making true connection is very hard to pull off. Feigning connection is easy. But actual connection: “soulmates”. It must feel really good to be able to find someone you are so in tuned to.

I’ll try doing this more often.
